Angling rules

It is important that you read the rules closely and check the status of the salmon quota before you go fishing in the Varde Stream System.

Different zones, different rules

Please notice, that Grindsted Anglers' Association shares some of its fishing waters with other associations, therefore, it is important, that you know the rules for the specific zone you would like to fish.

Zone 2, 3 og 4 - Rules

Zone 2, 3 og 4 is closed from 1 November to 15 April (dates includeed)

Close seasons

  • Pike is protected from 1 April to 30 April
  • Grindsted Anglers' Association urges that browntrout is released
  • Greyling is protected
  • Houting is protected
  • Seatrout is protected on Y-stykket (on Zone 2)
  • Salmon is protected in the Varde Stream, however, in 2014 the anglers is given an extemption, that allows them to catch 125 salmon (Read more about this below).

Minimum size limit

  • Browntrout 30 cm
  • Seatrout 40 cm
  • Laketrout 40 cm
  • Salmon 40 cm
  • Pike 60 cm

 Mandatory reporting of catch

  • From the season 2014 all caught salmon, seatrout, brown trout and graylings must be reported. The report is mandatory and independent of whether the fish have been killed or released. Fishing rules

  • Anglers are only allowed to move along the stream. Keep off crops and tall grass.
  • Camping is not permitted.
  • ALWAYS show consideration for the plot owner.
  • Only use marked roads and parking areas.
  • Fish hooks, paper, bottles, fishing lines and other litter should NOT be dumped in nature.
  • Do not touch fish traps.
  • Dogs are not allowed near the streams.
  • Protected, undersized and spawned out fish must be released at all times.
  • When fishing in the Varde Stream system one must read the rules ”Regulation for Salmon Fishing in the Varde Stream System 2014”. Rules may be downloaded at www.fiskekortvest.dk under downloads.

Catch limits in Varde Stream System

  • The Varde Stream Association has been granted permission by the Danish Directorate for Fisheries to catch and kill a maximum of 120 salmon in 2014. The quota is divided into 65 salmon smaller than or equal to 75 cm and 55 salmon longer than 75 cm in the period from 16 April 2014 up to and including 31 October 2014. This allocated quota of salmon (Quota A) applies to following parts of the Varde Stream System (Varde Å-systemet):
  • The Grindsted stream (Grindsted Å) from the damming at Utoft fish farm and downstream to the mouth in the Wadden Sea
  • The Ansager stream (Ansager Å) from the damming at Ansager Mølle and downstream to the mouth in the Wadden Sea
  • In addition, an exemption has been granted to catch 5 additional salmon (Quota B) in those parts of the Varde Stream that are not cov-ered in the above (e.g. Linding Stream, Holme Stream, Ansager Stream upstream the damming at Ansager Mølle and upstream Grindsted Stream at Utoft fish farm). Quota B is not split into salmon smaller and larger than 75 cm.
  • Information about the number of caught salmon can at any time be followed on the website of Varde Anglers Association on the front page and under the menu fangstrapportering (in Danish)
  • You are only allowed to kill three salmonids per day (salmon, sea trout and brown trout). However, you are only allowed to kill one salmon per year.
  • Catch reports must be submitted immediately, and the exact length of the salmon in centimetres must be stated in the catch report. Sub-mission must be made within four days after the catch! Submission is made at:
  • - Released salmon as well as caught salmon must be reported electronically. It is requested that salmon that will be released are treated as gently as possible. Reporting of released salmon is done electronically on:

Special rules for 2014

  • It is not allowed to use barbed hooks, except the below mentioned.
  • Fishing with natural bait or scented bait is only allowed on circle hooks without barbs. However, when fishing with bait, it is allowed to use other types of hooks with barbs, provided that it is a single hook in hook size #12 or a single hook which is smaller. The gap og the hook on single hooks with barbs must not measure more than 6 mm measured from the tip of the hook and perpendicular on the shaft of the hook.
  • It is not allowed to fish with shrimp and roe as bait.
  • It is only allowed to use one hook on the fishing line. The hook must be a single hook, double hook or treble hook.

Zone 5 - Rules

Zone 5 consists of the following stretchesof streams with the appertaining close seasons. 

Close seasons

  • Pike is protected from 1 April to 30 April
  • Grindsted Anglers' Association urges that browntrout is released

  • Seatrout is protected on Y-stykket (on Zone 2)
  • Salmon is protected in the Varde Stream, however, in 2014 the anglers is given an extemption, that allows them to catch 125 salmon (Read more about this below).

  • Seatrout 40 cm
  • Laketrout 40 cm

  • Pike 60 cm
  • Steelhead has no minimum size limit, and must not be released when caught

Catch restrictions

  • You are only allowed to kill one salmonids per day on zone 5 (salmonids are: salmon, sea trout and brown trout). And you are only allowed to kill one salmon per year.

Øvrige regler

  • It is allowed to fish only with one rod 
  • It is allowed to use only lures, flies and earth worms
  • Chumming is not allowed
  • A spouse/live-in partner of a member as well as kids or grandkids below the age of 12 of a member are allowed to fish for free if accompanied by a member.

Rules for disabled persons

  • Persons with a disability can get a free visitor's angling license to the three handicap fishing grounds
  • The visitor's angling license is personal, which means that the disabled person must be the person carrying out the fishing
  • Personal assistants for handicapped persons is allowed to assist the disabled person, not fish for them. If the personal assistant wishes to fish, this person is obliged to buy a membership or day permit.
